Undergraduate Research
There are currently no openings in the lab (MBIO3440 or MBIO3980) for Spring 2022. Here is a blog post on how to get involved in UG research.
Having the opportunity to join a research lab as an undergraduate is a privilege. It requires a significant time commitment, and you must be enthusiastic about the research. If you aren’t serious about research as a career or are overcommitted, this likely isn’t your activity. It is tough to have a set schedule in the lab every week because of the nature of the research and the type of experiments you may be doing at the time. Keep all this in mind before inquiring about joining the lab.
Be prepared to start on a probationary status performing routine lab maintenance. If you are interested in a senior thesis and/or Honors project* this must be made clear at the initial inquiry. To participate in a senior thesis, a student must have had 6-12 months of productive experience in the lab before the first enrollment. Authorization for enrollment in the second semester of the senior thesis is contingent on satisfactory progress in the lab.
Requirements
Visit the Research Page and send a one-page statement on what you feel you can contribute to the lab group
One to two letters of recommendation from professors (not TAs)
2-semester commitment (4 semesters preferred)
Enrollment in 3 credit hours of undergraduate research (MBIO3440) or Honors Research (MBIO3980)*. Three credit hours equates to 10-15 hours per week in the lab. Less than this impacts your grade.
Weekly lab meeting attendance (varies with each semester based on lab member schedules)
Weekly graduate seminar attendance (Friday afternoons)
Bi-weekly progress reports
*Honors projects and enrollment in MBIO3980 is done through the Honors College. Before enrollment, the student is responsible for obtaining the appropriate paperwork for Dr. Karr to fill out and sign.
Special Opportunities for Undergraduate Research
We typically host one FYRE research student per year.
